Hartmut Fähndrich, born 1944 in Tübingen, was a lecturer of Arabic language and civilization at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich from 1978 to 2014. He has held numerous positions as visiting professor at universities in Germany, France and Italy. From 1984 to 2010, he was editor in charge of the "Arabic Literature" collection at the LENOS publishing house in Basel. His numerous translations of Arabic literature (Sonallah Ibrahim, Naguib Mahfouz, Ibrahim al-Koni and many more) into German have earned him several renowned awards, including the "Hieronymus-Ring" by the German Association of Translators in 1995 and the Arab League Award for the translation of contemporary Arabic literature in 2004. His translations of the novelsDas junge Kairo(Cairo Modern) by Naguib Mahfouz andHinter dem Paradies(Beyond Paradise) by Mansura Eseddin (both Unionsverlag) as well as selected newspaper columns by Alaa al-Aswani under the titleIm Land Ägypten.
